A decade ago, a shell space was created on the roof of a 1910 warehouse. As funding became available, rehearsal and event space was created by the same architect designing the building-wide renovation.
A huge new two-story-tall window was cut in the largest blank wall facing Milwaukee’s downtown lakefront. This alteration opened the space up to the city and increased interest as a rental event venue.
All spray-on fireproofing was removed and replaced with intumescent paint to allow the steel framing to be exposed. They were painted red to define and unify the space. Essential sound treatments, mechanical, electrical and theatrical lighting systems were added to the room, as were tracks for theatrical blackout curtains.
Minimal safety guard rails were added around existing diagonal steel bracing. The accessible roof terrace, overlooking Lake Michigan, was made available for public events..
